Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru insists he has nothing to hide over his 2025 Hamilton 7s trip, which drew public scrutiny after revelations that his spouse accompanied him.
Speaking in Lautoka yesterday before meeting Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Nadi, Mr Saukuru said the trip was approved by Cabinet and organised through the Fiji Sports Council.
“I went at the invitation of the Fiji Sports Council,” he said.
“My trip was approved by the Cabinet, however, the council also wanted my wife to go but her invitation came on a Sunday.
“We were specifically told her airfare was covered.
“I have given my explanation of what transpired to the honourable Prime Minister and I still maintain that I have nothing to hide.
“We were both invited. I was invited first and my wife was invited at the very last minute.”
On the criticism and calls for his resignation, he added, “People have their opinions about what has happened, they are free to say what they want.”
