Rio Olympic Games gold medallist and 2019 World Rugby 7s Player of the Year, Jerry Tuwai, has called on local rugby players to work hard in order to be successful in the sport.

After leading his FDS Barbarians team to win the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s title on Saturday in Taveuni, Tuwai said discipline and a devoted religious life would help a player become successful in rugby and in life.

“We need to walk closely with God because our success and victory on the rugby field, I believe, depends on discipline,” Tuwai said.

Discipline and being religious, he said, had rewarded him with victories on the rugby paddocks.

“It is very important that as rugby players, we maintain discipline. For me, depending on God is everything in my life.”

Fiji 7s head coach Gareth Baber had earlier said Tuwai would be part of Fiji’s defence of the Olympics 7s gold medal in Japan.
