Jare, Mar win bowls singles titles

JARE Josaia and Sheryl Mar took out the Geotech Drilling National Singles Championship at the Suva Bowling Club on Sunday.

Josaia staged a late comeback to upset in-form Samuela Tui 21-19 in a thrilling men’s division final while Mar edged Elizabeth Mocewai 21-17 to claim the women’s division crown.

It was a sweet victory for Vatukoula Bowling Club’s Josaia, who won the national title and the late Raj Charan trophy for the first time.

SBC manager/ secretary Diwan Chand said Josaia made a slow start as title favourite Tui raced to a big 8-1 lead.

“At one stage Tui was leading 17-8. It was obvious that Tui would win by a big margin. But then things changed.

“Jare found great lines and correct deliveries to draw level 19-19. In the final end, Jare won with two shots,” he said.

In the men’s semi-finals, Tui thrashed Curtis Mar 21-2 while Josaia overcame Waisea Turaga 21-15.

In the women’s semis, Mocewai beat Radhika Prasad 21-20 and Mar defeated Loretta Tikoisuva 21-9. Defending champion Litia Tikoisuva crashed out in the quarter-finals after losing to Mocewai 21-9.
