A 35-year-old woman has been given a sentence of two years and three months for throwing a knife at her husband.

On July 30 Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull ordered the mother-of-five to serve three months of her head sentence in jail, while the remaining two years are suspended for five years.

Court records show the victim was in the kitchen cooking when her husband returned from work. He touched her cheek to try and cheer her up because she appeared angry and irritated.

He continued touching her despite being asked to stop while she was cutting eggplants for dinner.

As he was walking away, the woman threw a knife at him, which struck his back and drew blood.

He called out to his children to get herbal medicine to stop the bleeding, then fell unconscious.

A neighbour managed to get a vehicle to take him to the Valelevu Health Centre before he was transferred to the CWM Hospital where he was discharged three days later.

Justice Bull said the woman’s husband was already walking away when she threw the knife at him, therefore he was vulnerable and unable to protect himself.

He later wrote to the Office of th DPP to withdraw the complaint against his wife.

The woman has three previous convictions, two of which were violent in nature. She has 30 days to appeal.
