The Volavola legacy in rugby is continuing.

Names such as former Fiji 7s skipper Mosese and Timoci, who is now the Fijiana 7s assistance coach come to mind with the name.

They are from Nadroga and another is on their heels.

Jack Volavola, a close relation to Mosese, is a Fijian Drua prospect in the near future.

He is among the rising stars of Fijian rugby.

He is part of the Swire Shipping Fijian Warriors side preparing for the return match against Manuma Samoa on Saturday.

The Nadroga fullback, 19, a product of kaji rugby in Nadroga, Cuvu College under-18, and Fiji U20, looks forward to climbing the rungs of rugby until becoming a Flying Fijian.

“I am from Yadua, Nadroga and have maternal links in Cuvu,” he said during the Fijian Warriors training session at Bidesi Grounds in Suva yesterday.

He was instrumental in the Fijian Warriors 60-10 drubbing of the Samoans last weekend.

“Last week’s match was a huge step in learning top rugby competition. After Saturday, I know there are a lot of challenges ahead, especially for me to improve my game so that I can meet the expectations of the coaches and the result required from a player at the top level.

“Being called to join the Fijian Warriors is a huge step because now I am playing alongside some players who we always look up to since we were young. To learn from them and to be part of the same team is a boost for any player like me.

“It is an honour to achieve that.”

Volavola started his rugby at primary school level at Nadroga before moving to Natabua High School in Lautoka.

“We will not all excel inside the classroom, but I am privileged to have a set of rugby skills that has allowed me to join the Fijian Warriors as I intend to reach the top and that is to play for the Flying Fijians.”

The Fijian Warriors will meet Manuma Samoa at 3pm on Saturday at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
