A HEARTFELT promise to his son powered New Zealand paddler Bryce Irving to gold in the Masters 40 men’s 500m final at the Wai Tui International 2026 in Wailoaloa yesterday.

Irving delivered a strong and composed performance on the calm waters, showing experience and determination to finish on top of the field.

But behind the victory was a simple motivation that meant everything to him.

“I did this for my son. Before I went out to sea, my son told me to do my best,” Irving said.

“I did my best for my son.”

The emotional drive pushed Irving through the race, turning his effort into a memorable win in the Masters division.

He also praised the racing conditions in Nadi, saying the setting played a key role in the quality of competition.

“It’s beautiful conditions here in Nadi. Wailoaloa Bay better weather for sprints,” he said.

Irving’s win is a reminder that beyond medals and results, it is often the personal reasons that inspire athletes to give their very best.
