The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has confirmed it conducted a joint inspection yesterday  morning following a report of a fuel slick observed in Suva Harbour, near the beacon opposite the China Club.

In a statement, the Ministry said its inspectors, working together with officers from Fiji Ports Limited, carried out an on-site boat inspection and drone surveillance to assess the extent of the reported pollution and to help identify its possible source.

The Ministry noted that, as commonly occurs, the fuel slick dispersed with the incoming tide.

However, investigations are continuing and the area will be closely monitored for any further signs of pollution.

The Ministry has strongly urged all businesses and vessel operators to exercise heightened care when handling fuel, oil and other hazardous substances to prevent pollution of waterways and the marine environment.
