Ra Naari Parishad, a long–standing community organisation established in 1989, has spent decades championing the rights and wellbeing of women and girls in Ra.
Rooted in its mission to promote leadership, strengthen women’s voices, and support economic empowerment, the organisation continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of rural women.
Supporting women in remote communities has always been a cornerstone of Ra Naari Parishad’s work.
Over the years, the organisation has implemented a range of initiatives aimed at building confidence, enhancing skills, and creating opportunities for income generation.
These ongoing efforts have helped women strengthen household resilience, broaden their capabilities, and build strong support networks within their communities.
Today, with support from Women’s Fund Fiji, Ra Naari Parishad operates a vibrant community space that has become a hub for learning, healing, and collective empowerment.
Women from across Ra visit the centre for discussions on gender equality and leadership, as well as for yoga, meditation, and music activities that promote emotional wellbeing and personal growth.
“Our office is not just a building,” said Ra Naari Parishad coordinator, Radha Nair.
“It is a safe space, a classroom, a healing centre, and now a launching pad for women entrepreneurs.”
Economic empowerment remains a key pillar of the organisation’s work.
Women are encouraged to explore small–scale income opportunities through skills development, gardening initiatives, and the revival of traditional food production such as homemade chutneys and pickles.
These activities not only support livelihoods but also reinforce cultural identity and community pride.
A recent milestone for Ra Naari Parishad has been its involvement in the YGAP Accelerator Program.
Through this opportunity, the organisation is developing a gender–inclusive agri–tourism initiative that showcases authentic Indian cultural traditions, sustainable farming practices, and locally produced goods.
This vision aims to create sustainable livelihoods while sharing the richness of Ra’s cultural heritage with visitors.
“With the right opportunities, women do not just survive; they innovate, they lead, and they transform communities,” Ms Nair said.
“This is not charity. This is investment in women’s power.”
As the organisation looks to the future, Ra Naari Parishad remains committed to expanding its programmes, strengthening women’s economic independence, and nurturing community resilience.
What began as a safe space has grown into a powerful force for change, one that continues to uplift women and build sustainable futures across Ra.
