Our nation’s progress depends on the strength of our women.’
This was emphasised by Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Eseta Nadakuitavuki while speaking at the Fiji Corrections Service International Women’s Day celebration.
Acknowledging the growing role of women within the corrections service, Mrs Nadakuitavuki noted that about 130 women now serve across the country, taking on leadership roles and supervising both female and male inmates with professionalism and integrity.
However, she also highlighted emerging challenges, including digital harm, family pressures and misinformation on social media, stressing the importance of digital literacy, respect and responsible online engagement to protect women and girls.
“In the Ministry of Information, that is one of the major challenges we face today- to change the narrative and right the wrong. There is a lot of misinformation and disinformation coming from all angles, so we are trying to catch up and inform the public with the correct information. At the same time, we are also trying to alert the public that there is fake news circulating. It happens every day, and it makes our work more difficult,” she said.
“Promoting digital literacy, critical thinking and respectful engagement is therefore essential in ensuring that our digital spaces remain safe, inclusive and constructive for everyone.”
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Give to Gain”, she said progress for women happens when individuals and institutions uplift one another through mentorship, opportunity and support.
“Progress for women does not happen in isolation, it happens when individuals, institutions and communities choose to uplift one another.
“When women thrive, institutions grow stronger, communities become more resilient and societies prosper.”
Mrs Nadakuitavuki said the celebration also recognised the women behind the uniform- the mothers, daughters, sisters, mentors and leaders who continue to balance professional responsibilities with their roles within families and communities.
“You are role models for young women and girls across Fiji who may one day aspire to serve their nation in uniform or pursue leadership roles.”
