Collecting intelligence in any police investigation is vital, says former Fiji police chief of intelligence and investigations, Henry Brown.
Speaking as a guest on The Fiji Times online news portal, The Lens@177, Mr Brown said it helped in major investigations during his 30-year tenure with the force.
“Intelligence is a very key component of investigations,” he said. “You cannot have investigations without intelligence.
“It always guides the investigation in the right direction with a certain degree of certainty.
“You always get pushed to the right direction.”
Mr Brown said while serving under former police commissioner Ben Groenewald, the decision was made to set up a separate intelligence and investigations unit which he headed.
“When commissioner Groenewald took over there was no post of chief intel and investigations.
“Commissioner Groenewald in his wisdom saw the need for a separate assistant commissioner overlooking the intelligence side of things for both criminal and security and also overseeing all investigations.
“So, coming under one assistant commissioner was a bit too much, so he separated it and he appointed me.
“I was the chief admin officer at that time and looking through all of our CVs, he appointed me to that post.
“So, basically, I was overseeing all major investigations and all of the intelligence, both security and intelligence.”
