An inquest will determine the cause of death of Jone Vakarisisi, who died during an interview at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Coroner’s Office in line with legal requirements.

“During the formal interview process, Mr. Vakarisisi suffered a sudden and severe medical emergency. Immediate and exhaustive life-saving efforts were administered by qualified RFMF medical personnel on-site but unfortunately could not revive him, resulting in his unfortunate demise,” he said.

Commander Kalouniwai added that initial medical findings point to a possible underlying condition.

“Preliminary medical assessments suggest the presence of a pre-existing condition that may have contributed to this event,” he said.

He confirmed the military acted in accordance with the law following the incident.

“In strict adherence to the Inquests Act 1967, the RFMF has immediately notified the relevant authorities and referred the matter to the Coroner’s Office for an independent and formal inquiry.”

The RFMF has expressed regret over the incident.

“The RFMF deeply regrets this loss of life and emphasises that such an outcome is never desired,” Commander Kalouniwai said.

Authorities also confirmed that the three civilians who had voluntarily presented themselves for questioning have since been released, while one RFMF personnel remains in military custody to assist with ongoing internal disciplinary investigations.

The outcome of the inquest is expected to provide further clarity into the circumstances surrounding Vakarisisi’s death.
