Waisele Dokonivalu Inoke, the 2022 Coca-Cola Games blue ribbon champion, is on his way to the United States.
The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School 100m sprint king has scored a two-year scholarship at Neosho Community College in Kansas State.
Inoke said nothing short of divine intervention opened this door of opportunity for him and he acknowledged his coaches for their unwavering belief in his potential and his parents for raising him as an athlete.
“Upon receiving news of my scholarship, my parents were overjoyed and showered me with advice,” he said.
“They encouraged me to give my utmost dedication to my academic studies and my training while at Neosho Community College. I really acknowledge their support and I promise to fulfil their expectations.
“I want to be a role model for my peers and to inspire athletes.
“It is really important to focus on your goals and to keep persisting through challenges.
“My advice to all athletes — always give your best and never lose hope.”
While Waisale has high aspirations in terms of his athletic career in the US, he expressed uncertainty at representing Fiji at the upcoming Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands. Due to his studies in the US, he said he was unsure if he would be able to participate in the regional meet.
“I hope Athletics Fiji can negotiate my release to compete in the games because it has always been my desire to represent the country on the international stage.
“However, with my departure to Neosho scheduled for next month, I am eagerly looking forward to this new chapter in my life. The scholarship not only provides me with an opportunity to pursue higher education but also to further develop my athletic skills in a competitive environment.”
Inoke’s story serves as an inspiration to young athletes. It proves that through hard work, determination and the support of loved ones, doors to incredible opportunities can open.
