The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has confirmed that former inmate Pauliasi Delaibatiki earned more than $28,000 from artwork produced during his time associated with the Tagimaucia Art Gallery, following a detailed reconciliation process.
In a statement, FCS said the total earnings amounted to $28,423.20. Of this, $7,517.65 had already been withdrawn, leaving an outstanding balance of $20,905.55, which will now be paid out.
The organisation said a comprehensive review of Mr Delaibatiki’s earnings was already underway at the time of his release from custody, and this had been communicated to him.
However, concerns were raised on social media earlier this week by Mr Delaibatiki regarding his payments.
The FCS said the reconciliation process became necessary after it was discovered that records maintained by previous gallery officers were incomplete and, in some cases, not properly documented.
“As a result, the FCS Finance Team undertook a detailed reconciliation exercise, combining available records at the Tagimaucia Art Gallery with evidence provided by Mr Delaibatiki,” the statement said.
The process took several weeks to ensure accuracy and minimise risks associated with financial mismanagement.
While acknowledging Mr Delaibatiki’s concerns, the FCS said it would not be pressured by social media narratives to act outside established procedures.
It also stated that allegations of inappropriate conduct by its officers had been reviewed and found to be unsubstantiated.
The FCS reiterated its commitment to fair treatment while ensuring compliance with financial rules and established practices.
