In a significant boost to Fiji’s agricultural sector, the Government of India donated a consignment of 5 tonnes of cowpea seeds—the largest cowpea seed initiative in Fiji’s history.
The formal handover took place at a ceremony in Sabeto, Nadi, attended by High Commission of India second secretary Bibhash Lahiri, New Valley Processors (Fiji) Pte Ltd chairman Vinesh Ra, chief executive officer Navi Tuivuniwai and Ra Cowpeas Farms chairman and member of the New Valley Cluster Group Maciu Naqari.
The seeds, provided as grant assistance at the request of the Government of Fiji, underscore India’s commitment to supporting Fiji’s agricultural growth and rural development.
This landmark initiative will strengthen agricultural resilience by introducing high-quality, high-yielding seeds, empower local farmers with opportunities for greater crop diversity and improved productivity and bolster food security while generating higher incomes and enhancing rural livelihoods across the country.
Speaking at the event, officials highlighted the enduring friendship between India and Fiji—anchored in mutual respect, cooperation, and strong people-to-people ties.
India remains a steadfast development partner, contributing to Fiji’s socio-economic progress under the guiding principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – “The world is one family.”
This collaboration represents another step forward in fostering sustainable agriculture, economic resilience, and shared prosperity between the two nations.
