The Government will fund a new independent authority to manage the rollout of the national identification card, according to Reserve Bank of Fiji chief manager financial market officer Petaia Tuimanu.

Mr Tuimanu said the National Digital ID Authority will oversee the registration, management, and security of the system.

“The National Digital ID Authority will be government-funded but operate independently, with its own leadership and structure,” he said.

He made this comment after he was asked whether the Asian Development Bank would fund the setting up of the organisation, as it is currently funding the consultation phase.

While responding to the question during the consultation at the Labasa Civic Centre, he said, the body would be responsible for the overall rollout, including outreach to remote communities.

“It will have its own chief executive officer and staff.”

He said government funding will cover all operational costs, including staffing, equipment, and public awareness campaigns.

“The aim is to make registration as accessible and secure as possible while maintaining efficiency in service delivery.”

He said the establishment of an independent body was part of broader reforms to modernise government services and reduce administrative delays.
