Government agencies are strengthening intelligence coordination to dismantle organised drug networks operating in Fiji.

Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua said improved information sharing between agencies was central to the national drug crackdown.

“Improved information sharing between agencies is an important part of modern policing,” he said.

“Government agencies are strengthening intelligence coordination to better understand and disrupt organised criminal networks involved in drug trafficking and related crimes.”

Authorities believe organised criminal groups are driving the spread of illicit drugs across the country, requiring closer cooperation between enforcement and intelligence agencies.

However, Mr Naivalurua said details of operational strategies would remain confidential to protect ongoing investigations.

He also rejected suggestions that the military would routinely patrol communities as part of the anti-drug push.

“Rather, it is a targeted and situation-based partnership designed to enhance the effectiveness of police operations in specific circumstances where additional capability may be required.”

“The overall objective is to ensure that Fiji’s law enforcement agencies have the necessary support to address organised criminal activities, while maintaining full respect for democratic governance and the rule of law.
