OPPOSITION leader Inia Seruiratu said the recent escalation of immigration enforcement by the Trump administration had created a “state of fear and uncertainty for many former Fiji residents” and “meaningless rhetoric from misinformed commentators” had made the situation worse.

In a media statement released yesterday, Mr Seruiratu said they stood in solidarity with Fijian caregivers and other immigrants in California and would continue to advocate for policies that uphold the values of compassion, justice, and equality.

“As caregivers, these individuals have dedicated themselves to providing vital support and care to families in California, including vulnerable seniors, and individuals with disabilities,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“They have made significant contributions to the economic and social fabric of the state, and their presence is a testament to the strength and resilience of immigrant communities.

“Unfortunately, the Federal administration’s crackdown on unauthorised immigration has put these caregivers at risk of deportation.

“We strongly advocate for a humane and compassionate approach to immigration enforcement that prioritises the safety and wellbeing of all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.”

He also urged California state leaders to protect the rights and dignity of Fijian caregivers, and other immigrant families by offering pathways to citizenship and relief for individuals and support efforts to protect immigrant families and promote a culture of understanding and inclusion.
