A combined pledge by government and landowners in Vanua Levu to stop illegal logging is not being taken seriously.
The issue was raised by Minister for Forestry Kalaveti Ravu who expressed concern over the laxity being shown by custodians after the launch of the ‘Say No to Illegal Logging’ campaign in Labasa in February 2022.
Mr Ravu said while there was a noticeable decrease in illegal logging following the launch, the ministry noticed that the pledge made by stakeholders had not been taken as seriously as in the beginning.
“Given the seriousness of this matter and the potential ramifications for our community, it is crucial to shed light on the prevalence of illegal logging activities,” said Mr Ravu.
“The ramifications of such illegal activities extend beyond mere economic loss.
“Our resource owners, who are the custodians of these natural resources, are being deprived of their fair share of benefits.”
He said that this illegal activity not only undermined the livelihoods of resource owners but also threatened the sustainability of our environment and economy.
“We urge the public to be vigilant, it is not only the role of the Ministry but it is everyone’s role to ensure that our forests are sustainably managed.”
