INDIAN boxer Varun Phartyal is determined to upset Fiji’s super bantamweight champion and WBA Oceania Interim Super Bantamweight titleholder Junior Binnu Singh as they headline the ZEG boxing promotion this Saturday at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
The 30-year-old is unfazed by Singh’s boxing record and accomplishments and is confident of pulling off an upset in his Fijian debut.
“Junior Binnu Singh is a good fighter, he’s motivated, he’s a young lad, he’s got good support here in Fiji, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m more skilful, strong, I’m tough, fast and durable, and I think I’ll win the fight easy,” he said.
When asked if he is aiming for a knockout win, Phartyal replied:
“We’ll see if there is a knockout we will chase a knockout, if it goes to a decision, we will do that too. We’ll do anything to get the win.”
Phartyal has warned Binnu to come prepared, as he intends to give him a great contest in the ring.
Phartyal initially was a Muay Thai fighter before transitioning to amateur boxing in 2017, where he participated in the Indian State Games and National Games, reaching the quarterfinals and competing in other elite competitions in India.
In 2021, he took up professional boxing, he enters the contest with a record of six wins (two by knockout) and four losses.
Phartyal’s contest against Binnu Singh will be a 10-round bout (three minutes each) for the vacant PBCNZ South Pacific Super Bantamweight title.
