A directive issued in May 2023 that requires all government vehicles be turned off when not in use is still effective, says Civil Service Ministry permanent secretary Parmesh Chand.

In the circular sent to all permanent secretaries and heads of department, Mr Chand had directed this was part of commitments to reducing carbon emissions and operating costs in the civil service.

“Drivers of Government vehicles (with exception of vehicles used directly to transport HE President) are to have their ignition and aircon switched off when not in use,” Mr Chand had stated in the circular.

“In other words, drivers are not to keep vehicle ignition and aircon running while in waiting.”

Mr Chand told this newspaper this directive was still in effect.

“This is all part of cost cutting efforts as well as our commitment to reduce carbon emissions whenever possible,” he said.
