The iconic ‘Grand Old Lady’. Picture: GRAND PACIFIC HOTEL SUVA

Historical elegance meets modern luxury

Steeped in over a century of illustrious history, the Grand Pacific Hotel Suva stands as an iconic symbol of luxury and opulence. This magnificent establishment effortlessly blends the grandeur of bygone eras with the sleek comforts of modern living. Nestled on the scenic Suva waterfront, I had the pleasure of experiencing a magical weekend staycation at this historic establishment on June 1, 2024. This stay was particularly significant as it aligned with the celebration of the hotel’s 110th anniversary since opening its doors on May 23, 1914. In a serendipitous coincidence, it also provided the perfect occasion to celebrate the first anniversary of RAAVI, my intimate apparel line.

A journey through time

The Grand Pacific Hotel, often revered as the “Grand Old Lady” of the Pacific, was reopened in May 2014 following a complete restoration on its centenary. This timeless beauty harmoniously blends heritage architecture with Fijian hospitality, making every visit a memorable experience. The grand celebration of the 100th anniversary remains vivid in my memory, particularly the 150.6-meter-long cake displayed in the hotel’s 163-meter-long car park—a spectacle that has kept me coming back to this enchanting establishment.

Opulent welcome and seamless check-in

As you enter the lobby of this iconic property, your mind instantly transcends to a space where old-world charm harmoniously coexists with contemporary convenience, enveloped in opulent historic interiors that promise an unforgettable and timeless retreat. The seamless check-in process immediately set the tone for the weekend ahead. Greeted with a refreshing lemon cooler beverage and a hot towel by the ever-friendly team, I felt an immediate sense of warmth and welcome.

Gastronomic delights with chef Samuel Hutabrat

The hotel’s bakery has always been one of my favourite spots, so I was thrilled to engage in a one-on-one conversation with Samuel Hutabrat, the executive pastry chef. Our hour-long discussion provided deep insights into the creative process behind the delightful pastries that I would be indulging in throughout the weekend. The culinary journey commenced with the Kanavata Buffet dinner, where the pastry selection was a highlight. The next morning, a variety of delectable patisserie awaited me at breakfast, each bite a testament to chef Hutabrat’s artistry. The crowning culinary experience, however, was the opulent high tea on Sunday afternoon, which I relished with my French friend, an avid travel enthusiast.

Five star wellness and rejuvenation

An invigorating workout at the hotel’s state-of-the-art fitness centre kick-started my Sunday morning. Overlooking the serene spa area, the centre offers top-notch equipment for cardio, resistance, and core training. Open daily from 5am to 8pm, it caters to both early risers and evening exercisers. After my workout, I took advantage of the sauna—the only one available at a hotel in Suva City—followed by a rejuvenating one-hour body massage. The GPH Spa, committed to using all Fijian-made skincare products, provided the perfect environment to unwind after my hectic travel schedule.

Exquisite high tea experience

The high tea experience was a feast for the senses. The assortment of sweet and savoury treats was simply exquisite. As someone with a sweet tooth, I adored the passion fruit macaroon and lemon meringue tart, while my friend savoured the blueberry cheesecake and mixed berries panna cotta. The selection also included delicious chicken and egg sandwiches, vegetarian quiche, arancini, and both plain and sultana scones. This experience is highly recommended for any celebratory occasion.

A serene and luxurious ambiance

Every moment spent at the Grand Pacific Hotel Suva was enriched by breathtaking views and invigorating sea breezes. The lit evening and the hotel’s rich heritage created an ambiance that was both nostalgic and luxurious. The GPH truly is a masterpiece of heritage architecture and Fijian charm, offering an unforgettable experience for all who visit.

The lasting impression

As I departed, I carried with me not just memories of a splendid weekend, but a deeper connection to a place that beautifully intertwines history, luxury, and the warmest hospitality. Whether you are celebrating a milestone or simply seeking a luxurious retreat, the Grand Pacific Hotel Suva promises an experience that transcends the ordinary.
