Minister Charan Jeath Singh says his appointment to oversee Public Enterprises comes with a clear mandate from the Prime Minister — to transform government-owned companies into profitable and sustainable organisations.

“I am here, appointed by the Prime Minister, to turn around government-owned enterprises into profitable organisations,” Minister Singh said during his first official engagement after assuming the portfolio.

Mr Singh now holds responsibility for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, and Public Enterprises.

He made the comments while meeting with the Acting Permanent Secretary, Laisa Bolalevu, and the Ministry’s senior management team.

During the meeting, officials provided the Minister with a comprehensive briefing on the Ministry’s operations, strategic objectives and the current performance of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) under its oversight.

Minister Singh said the Government had supported many SOEs for years and that the time had come for stronger financial discipline and results.

“The Government has been supporting these companies for many years, and my role is to ensure they become financially sustainable while delivering tangible benefits to communities and businesses across Fiji,” he said.

He stressed that improving SOE performance would have broader national benefits, including economic growth, job creation and better service delivery.
