The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has confirmed that the week-long hunger strike involving 27 inmates at the Maximum Corrections Centre has officially ended as of this morning.

According to FCS, the strike, which began on Wednesday, August 13, was broken when the two ringleaders of the protest resumed eating at breakfast.

The remaining six prisoners who had continued to abstain followed shortly after.

“The cessation of the hunger strike was prompted by the two ringleaders who ate their breakfast first this morning, following which the remaining six prisoners later followed their influencers,” said FCS in a statement.

“The vanua, church and family members are critical partners with FCS in the prisoners’ holistic rehabilitation journey leading towards their social reintegration.”

FCS did not indicate whether any of the grievances raised by the prisoners had been resolved or addressed.
