Fiji National University (FNU) marked the start of its three-day December graduation at the Vodafone Arena yesterday, honouring hundreds of students, including four PhD graduates — a first for the institution’s December conferral.
The four doctoral graduates from the Colleges of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies; Engineering & Technical Vocational Education; and Humanities, Education & Law were celebrated as examples of the university’s growing research capacity and commitment to nurturing local expertise.
In his address, former sevens-rugby legend Waisale Serevi reminded the new graduates that “education is not only what you know, it is who you become,” urging them to draw on both modern learning and traditional knowledge as they navigate a changing world.
FNU’s vice-chancellor, Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said the graduation reflects the university’s “immense pride and joy” at seeing students complete their academic journeys, and emphasised that such achievements strengthen Fiji’s human capital.
For many graduates, yesterday’s ceremony represents not just the end but a hopeful beginning, as they prepare to contribute to their communities, professions, and nation in the years ahead.
