ALMOST three hundred people took to the streets of Suva recently to commemorate International Human Rights Day.

With the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement leading the protest, the march began at the Flea Market and ended at the Bowling Club.

It featured speeches from prominent figures, including Minister for Women and Children Lynda Tabuya, and Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) coordinator Shamima Ali.

In an interview with this newspaper, Ms Ali expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support for the event, especially given the short notice organisers received.

“I’m very, very encouraged by the numbers, and I’m very happy, considering we got such late notice for the march,” Ms Ali said.

She explained that the usual preparations for such events involve weeks of planning, including applying for permits a month in advance.

However, due to the late approval for this year’s march, she was concerned about the turnout.

Despite these challenges, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

“There was a lot of back-and-forth with the police, and it took a long time to get the permit for Human Rights Day.

“We were only allowed to march with 250 people, and I had to negotiate with the commander to ensure we could get the permit in time.”

Ms Ali acknowledged the support of Ms Tabuya, who intervened to expedite the process.

“But it shouldn’t have to be like that.

“It’s our basic right to assemble, to express ourselves, to speak freely. Human rights are for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or abilities.

“Yet, for many women, girls, and marginalised communities, this promise is often unfulfilled.

“This is when we fight the hardest. We must continue the fight to ensure that all of us, everyone in Fiji, the region, and around the world, has their human rights.”
