Hughes weds sweetheart

LONDON Wasps rugger Nathan Hughes scored the biggest try of his life on Saturday when tying the knot with sweetheart Ella Smits in Lautoka.

The wedding ceremony was held at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

Pat Lam, Nathan’s coach at Auckland was among the guests who attended the ceremony.

Smits hails from Holland.

Nathan is the son of William Hughes a former national hockey rep. His uncle Asaeli is a dual international having represented Fiji in basketball and rugby.

Nathan attended Saint Thomas High School. He was scouted by Kelston Boys High School’s physical education head of department, Athens Henare when their under-16 side played against Saint Thomas High School in Lautoka in 2008.

Kelston offered Nathan a partial scholarship in 2009 based on his education and rugby ability, physical attributes and family connection in West Auckland.

He went on to represent the Auckland U18 secondary school team.

Nathan signed up with the Auckland Rugby Academy and was given full scholarship at Kelston a year later.

He made his debut for Auckland in the ITM Cup against Otago in 2011.

In March 2013, Nathan signed up with English premiership side London Wasps earning 13 caps as of May 3 this year.

He is currently eligible to represent Fiji, Samoa and England in two years.

Nathan will turn 23 next month.
