Fiji Cancer Society board chair Makrava Wilson reminded Housing Authority staff the importance of regular health check-up and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in their fight against cancer.

While accepting about $2000 in donation from the Authority, Mr Wilson says as cancer is the third most common cause of death in Fiji, more awareness is needed in terms of highlighting the symptoms and preventative measures for the deadly disease.

“Some cancers are caused by our genes, but the majority are linked to poor lifestyle choices,” Mr Wilson said.

“I encourage everyone to really think about how they can adopt a healthy lifestyle such a weighing less, eating right, do not smoke among others.”

He said the FCS was urging all Fijians to take a more active role in adopting healthy lifestyle practices.

“Take on board the message that by adopting these simple lifestyles behaviours and changes, we can significantly reduce the chances of developing cancers and other non-communicable diseases.

“The prevention of cancer before it starts will have a huge impact on our families and communities across Fiji.”

Meanwhile, while handing over the donation to the FCS, authority CEO Ritesh Singh vowed that the entire team and their family members would get screened soon.

He said the morning tea was an opportunity for the staff to hear of the survivors’ stories and know more about the various types of cancer and its symptoms.

Mr Singh expressed his gratitude to the FCS for its contribution towards raising awareness and leading the fight against cancer.

“This amount is really small compared to the immense work done by the society but we are proud to be part of that through this donation,” Mr Singh said.
