The Housing Authority yesterday conducted a barrel draw for 100 model homes at the Nepani Subdivision, marking the Authority’s return to home construction for the first time in more than 30 years.
The draw was held at the Authority’s head office in Valelevu and was witnessed by officials from the Ministry of Housing & Local Government, the Fiji Police Force, and Housing Authority staff.
The process reflected a renewed focus on building affordable homes, alongside the Authority’s traditional role of land development.
Housing Authority chief executive Isikeli Navuda said the Nepani Model Homes project was the first of several housing initiatives planned across the country.
He said the 101 two-bedroom homes were allocated through a transparent draw, following a detailed screening, selection and objection process to ensure fairness and accountability.
In addition to Government assistance through the Housing Assistance Grant, the Authority has subsidised land and house costs by $2.9 million to keep the homes affordable for low-income families.
Mr Navuda said public interest in the project was strong, with the Authority planning to deliver up to 400 additional homes by the end of the year, including two- and three-bedroom units.
General Manager Finance and Administration Poasa Verevakabau said the milestone reflected close collaboration between the Authority’s board, management, staff and stakeholders.
Successful applicants will now move to the next stage, including the issuing of offer letters and facilitation of housing grants.
