A sixty-four-year-old man has died following a house fire at Para’s Point in Vunivau, Labasa, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Police said the fire is believed to have started around 3am, engulfing the home while the victim was inside. The cause of the blaze remains unknown and investigations are ongoing.
The victim, identified as Rajeshwar, was reportedly living alone at the time.
His wife, Saroj Wati, said they had been separated since August last year, although they had previously reconciled after decades apart.
“He has been living alone for eight months,” she said.
Ms Wati said she received a call from her husband at about 2.40am but did not answer. She later missed another call from a landline before being informed by a relative that the house had been completely destroyed.
Despite their separation, she said the news of his death came as a shock.
