Facilities at the Lautoka Hospital are certainly below where we would like them to be.

This was the sentiment of Aspen Medical Fiji chief executive Annette Owttrim when queried on whether residents of Lautoka should expect better facilities with the overall change in management at the major hospital.

“There’s a lot of work which the public can’t see at the moment because there’s a lot of planning that does go on,” Ms Owttrim said. “What you will see in the next couple of months is the foyer to the Lautoka Hospital will be all modernised with a small coffee shop going in.

“The next few months after that will be finalisation of the new construction of the MRI suite and the CSSD and the cardiac Cath lab and then by the time that’s finished, you’ll be seeing the start of a new building which is out to the back of the hospital.”

Ms Owttrim said from next month, there’ll be constant movement as a lot of the facilities are being rebuilt. She said once they’re rebuilt, everything would be up to international standards.

“So the challenge in the facilities, there’s not as hard as making sure that we have a standard of care and that comes from the ongoing education.”

She added new equipment would be part of changes at the Lautoka Hospital and the company was in the process of organising staff members new uniforms.

Ms Owttrim said despite the change in management the names of the health facilities would remain unchanged.
