IT’S that time of the year again where the two communities of Suvavou and Vatuwaqa come together to celebrate their ancestral linkage through the sport of rugby.
A team from Suvavou and Vatuwaqa will contest for the traditional Tui Suva Shield today at Albert Park in Suva.
According to the sports’ coordinator of the Tui Suva Shield, Moses Tuilau, this event has two main purposes.
“This competition is to strengthen the ties between Vatuwaqa and Suvavou. There is a yavusa in Suvavou named after Vatuwaqa and there are some people originally from here who are now residing in Vatuwaqa. So, every year we try to celebrate and strengthen that link.
“The other purpose of holding this event is to get these young people away from drug abuse,” he said.
The event was revived in 2024 after 16 years.
Vatuwaqa is the current holder of the Tui Suva Shield.
The match will kick off at 3.30pm.
