Fiji Builkula took to the field in Albert Park yesterday as part of training in the lead-up to their first match against the Cook Islands Moana side, in week two of the 2024 Pacific Championships.

Talei Holmes, the team captain, spoke after their training run and said they focused on essential areas needed for improvement, and to continue doing so throughout the week.

“We all got together and did a bit of attack, a bit of defence, and pretty much went through all our movements that we’ll be going through throughout the week,” Holmes said.

“It was good to get together and get the ball in hand for a little bit.”

The young captain acknowledged the force of strength that their Cooks’ opponents embodied as well, particularly in the middle.

“We know we’ve got to tighten our ruck up, they’ve got a few strong girls in their side, and we’ve really got to make sure we’ve got our defence and that will definitely win us the game,” Holmes said.

Holmes, with links to the island of Taveuni in the North, stated the team’s camaraderie was in high spirits, following their entry into camp at the Grand Pacific Hotel on Saturday and a church service on Sunday at the Qauia Methodist Church in Lami.

“We found a bond already off the field, we’re doing devotions and team meetings and I think that’s the most important thing,” she said.

“We’ve got a really strong connection already, showing it out on the field today (yesterday) and we’ve grown that.”
