THREE local coaches and two officials are part of the Fiji Amateur Boxing team in New Zealand.
These coaches and officials and leading a team of young boxers set to compete at the New Zealand Invitational on November 1.
The local coaches will assist head coach Cam Todd in preparing the team for the competition.
Anil Chand who is Fiji’s most experienced judge and referee will also be officiating at the competition while Prakash Chand will get his first international exposure as an official.
Their inclusion is part of Todd’s initiative for the holistic growth of the sport in Fiji.
“For me it’s important to grow the whole sport, the boxers, coaches and the officials, and I want to do this on a regular basis to help our country grow in the sport of boxing,” Todd said.
It will be the first international competition experience for coaches Rusi Qarasaumaki from Kwaca Na Vatu Boxing Club, Tui Lomaloma from Nausori Boxing Club and Ana Ledua who is Fiji’s first female certified coach.
“Two of the coaches are Tui and Rusi, they are from two of the bigger clubs in Fiji so its important they get some exposure so they can help their clubs grow.
“And we also have Ana Ledua who is Fiji’s first female certified coach and given that we have six girls in the team, it’s essential to get a woman coach getting involved and learning and growing as part of the team.”
All three coaches were part of FABA’s coach certification system introduced by the national head coach and will get first hand insight and knowledge of how preparations are done in international competitions.
