Holi is more than a festival of colours — it symbolises the defeat of tyranny and the triumph of truth over injustice, National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad says.

In a statement released yesterday, as Hindus across Fiji marked the annual celebration, Mr Prasad said Holi carried a timeless message about standing firm against oppression and upholding equality and dignity.

“Holi teaches us the all-important message of triumph of good over evil, victory of truth and righteousness over injustice, and the upholding at all times of equality, dignity and social justice for all our people,” he said.

Mr Prasad noted that Holi had been celebrated in Fiji for more than 145 years since the arrival of the girmitiya in 1879, remaining deeply rooted in the nation’s history.

He said the festival reflected Fiji’s multicultural identity.
