LABASA College has etched its name into the history books of Fiji Secondary Schools Futsal Championship after its under-17 girls’ futsal side clinched the national title beating defending champion AD Patel College 3-1 in the final at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva last week.
Head coach Roneel Ram expressed pride in the achievement, describing the moment as “being on top of the world” after the school fielded futsal teams for the first time.
In an even more impressive feat, all four Labasa College teams that were qualified for the National Championships progressed to the semi-finals, with the U17 girls going on to secure the title.
“This is all down to the hard work and sacrifice of the Babasiga girls, the teachers, and the officials, not just those here, but also the teachers and supporters back home — this was truly a combined effort,” he said.
Preparation played a key role in their success, with the coach commending his players for their discipline and commitment throughout the campaign.
Ram says that the team’s willingness to listen, learn, and execute instructions set them apart from their competitors.
“They were terrific. Very disciplined, and they followed every instruction.
“Most of them even called me ‘father’, and they lived up to expectations with their devotion and unity,” he said.
Looking ahead, the coach emphasised the importance of continued support for women’s sports, noting the steady growth of female participation.
“Female sport is growing, and it needs to keep growing. I urge everyone to support our girls.”
He also acknowledged the unwavering support behind the team’s success, extending gratitude to school principal, the players, parents, and supporters who stood by them throughout the journey.
