More than 50 students in the Western Division were awarded the Hindi High Achievers Award in Lautoka on Saturday.

A collaboration between the High Commission of India and the Girmit Multicultural Centre, the event honoured students who demonstrated outstanding performances in the Hindi language.

In an interview, Nawai Secondary School student, Shreya Chand said she is grateful to be learning her mother tongue.

“I’m happy to be among other students receiving this prize today,” she said.

“It (Hindi) is important because it encourages students to also take Hindi so they can know their mother tongue and have a better understanding of the Hindi language.”

Ms Chand said her family and parents are very supportive and have been teaching her the basic Hindi phrases.

“I encourage other schools to teach Hindi so that students who are interested in taking Hindi can learn more about the culture and language.”

The High Commission of India’s second secretary, Shri Ishwar Singh Yadav officiated at the event.
