The Local Government and Housing Ministry is looking at high-rise building options to address land scarcity and is also reviewing the housing grant to better support low-income families, says Minister Maciu Nalumisa.

When asked about plans for high-rise developments at the Fiji Architecture Conference and Trade Exhibition 2025, the minister confirmed the option is being considered, though it comes with significant costs.

“Well, that’s something that I’ve discussed, that the issue with high-rise buildings comes with a lot of cost,” he said.

“The higher you go, the bigger the cost becomes.”

Mr Nalumisa said the Housing Authority of Fiji is exploring a mix of single and row housing units, while the Public Rental Board has been directed to assess high-rise, high-street buildings for blocks of land it owns in Suva.

On the possible increase to the housing grant, he said the ministry is reviewing the allocation to give more support to lower-income families.

“The housing grant, so what we’re doing now, we’re reviewing the housing grant to those in the low-income, those in the low-income, and especially those earning $30,000.”

He said the review is underway.

“Hopefully once that is approved by Cabinet, they should be able to assist our low-income families, earning families.”
