A heavy rain warning remains in force for the northern and eastern parts of the Fiji group and has been cancelled for the rest of the country.

The warning continues to apply to Ra, Naitasiri, Tailevu North, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, as well as the Lau and Lomaiviti groups.

Weather officials say an active trough of low pressure, accompanied by cloud and rain, is slow-moving over the northern and eastern parts of the country and is expected to continue affecting these areas until Sunday.

Forecasts indicate occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms over the warned areas.

Elsewhere, cloudy periods with some showers are expected, along with afternoon thunderstorms and isolated heavy falls. Forecast confidence is rated moderate to high.

Significant rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours includes 123 millimetres at Nadarivatu, 99 millimetres at Wairikicake, and 96.5 millimetres at the RKS Lodoni.

Authorities have warned of possible impacts including flash flooding in flood-prone areas, rivers and streams, low-lying informal settlements and Irish crossings, which may lead to traffic disruptions.

Surface flooding in urban areas with poor drainage, wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours may also increase the risk of road accidents.

A flash flood warning remains in force for the whole of Fiji.
