The Fiji Meteorological Service has reiterated multiple severe weather warnings as an active trough of low pressure continues to affect the country, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding and strong winds across large parts of the Fiji Group.

In a 5:30am bulletin today, the weather office states a heavy rain warning and flash flood warning remain in force for the entire Fiji Group.

A strong wind warning applies to coastal areas in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Groups, Nadi–Lautoka–Ba–Tavua–Rakiraki corridor, parts of Bua and Macuata, including Labasa, Seaqaqa and Udu Point, as well as Rabi, Taveuni, Lau and Lomaiviti.

Meteorologists say the unsettled weather is being driven by an active trough of low pressure that remains slow-moving over the group, with a shallow low-pressure system embedded along the trough west of Viti Levu.

These conditions are expected to persist through the weekend, bringing heavy rain, squally thunderstorms and strong winds.

There will be occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times with thunderstorms for western and northern parts of Viti Levu, the interior of Ba and Ra, Naitasiri and Tailevu North, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby islands, Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti.

Fresh to strong northwesterly winds of 35 to 45 kilometres per hour with gusts up to 60 kilometres per hour are expected, with rough seas.

Authorities warn that persistent localised heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as rivers and streams.

The public is urged to remain vigilant, avoid flooded crossings, and follow official weather advisories closely.
