The constant heavy downpour in the West has prompted the Nadi Town Council to shift its major clean-up drive from April to the end of this month.

Council acting chief executive Muni Reddy said they had conducted the same in October last year just before the start of the cyclone season.

“We informed people to clear overgrown grass and vegetation, the other one we will start from February 28 as we are almost towards the end of the cyclone season,” he said.

“We shifted it earlier to February 28 because of the constant rain.

“This is for green waste and white goods collection; all the stuff that holds water and is a breeding ground for mosquitoes should be collected and left aside for proper disposal.”

Mr Reddy says the council’s drain cleaning program is ongoing and they will begin the major clean-up drive next Monday.

“This is a good opportunity for residents to get rubbish cleared, once this is cleared, it leaves no ground for mosquito breeding. This is a free clean-up and it will help reduce the risks of dengue fever in residential areas.

“We will cover the entire Nadi Town boundary, so the residents need to make good use of this opportunity to clean their compounds and dispose of green waste and white goods.”

The program will end in two weeks.
