Heavy rain and flooding disrupt water supply in Western division

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has advised customers that persistent heavy rainfall and major flooding linked to Tropical Cyclone Urmil have affected several water supply operations, particularly across parts of the Western Division.

WAF said continuous rainfall has flooded multiple raw water sources and facilities, resulting in high turbidity levels, clogged intake screens and access challenges to key treatment plants and pumping stations.

Affected sites include the Narara and Nakasia intakes, Qalau and Nasivi raw water pump stations, Waica intake, Varaciva and Waiwai dams, Buabua, Nalau and Varaqe dams, and the Keiaysi River intake.

As a result, water production capacity has been temporarily reduced in Tavua, Ba, Lautoka and Sigatoka, which may lead to intermittent supply disruptions, reduced water pressure or water rationing in some communities.

Despite the challenging conditions, WAF said most major water treatment plants and distribution systems remain operational.

Teams are closely monitoring systems, managing production, diverting supply to essential areas and maintaining services where possible. Water carting services have also been deployed to support affected residential areas, businesses and critical services.

WAF noted that in several locations, inspection and restoration works cannot be carried out immediately due to flooding, unsafe access routes and ongoing severe weather. Crews will be deployed to undertake cleaning, repairs and restoration once conditions improve and it is safe to do so.

Customers in elevated and low-pressure areas—particularly in parts of the Western Division—may continue to experience temporary supply interruptions until floodwaters recede and full operations are restored.

WAF has urged customers to use water wisely, store sufficient water for essential needs, secure storage tanks, keep containers clean and covered, and report major leaks or supply issues through its customer service channels.

The Authority thanked the public for their patience and understanding as teams continue to respond to the impacts of the severe weather and work toward full restoration of services.
