Heavy rain and flood warning for parts of Fiji

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the Northern Division, and the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, as an active trough of low pressure continues to linger over the Fiji group.

The system is bringing widespread cloud, showers and prolonged rainfall that is expected to persist until Thursday.

A heavy rain alert also remains in place for the rest of the Fiji group, with authorities urging the public to stay informed as conditions evolve.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, areas in the Northern and Eastern Divisions should expect occasional to periods of heavy rain, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms.

Communities in the rest of the country can anticipate occasional rain with heavy falls possible, particularly during intense downpours.

In the 24 hours to 4.30am today, several stations in Vanua Levu recorded significant rainfall, including Dreketilailai – 200.5mm, Wairikicake – 178.5mm, Nayarabale – 175.0mm, Nakawaqa – 163.0mm and Vanuabalavu – 81.0mm.

These heavy accumulations have increased the risk of flooding across vulnerable communities.

A flash flood warning remains in force for low-lying and flood-prone areas in Labasa, Wailevu, Vunivesi, Savusavu, Bucaisau, Drawa, Nabalebale, Nakorotari, Nasekula, Batiri, Seaqaqa, and Nasekawa in Vanua Levu.

A flash flood alert also continues for the rest of Fiji.
