Heavy rain and flash flood warnings in force as TC Urmil affects Fiji

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the entire Fiji Group, as Tropical Cyclone Urmil (Category 2) continues to influence weather conditions across the country.

According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, Tropical Cyclone Urmil is located to the west-southwest of Kadavu and is tracking southeastwards, remaining south of the Fiji Group.

Active rainbands associated with the system, along with strong north-westerly winds, continue to affect much of the country.

Forecast for the Fiji Group indicates occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms.

Localised heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours (from 3am yesterday to 3am today) includes 57.0 millimetres in Tavua and 50.5 millimetres in Tokotoko.

As a result, a flash flood warning is now in force for the whole of Viti Levu, while a flash flood alert remains in force for the whole of Vanua Levu.

Tide levels for today show:

  • Lautoka: High tide of 1.52 metres at 3:40pm and low tide of 0.59 metres at 10:16am

  • Suva: High tide of 1.43 metres at 3:55pm and low tide of 0.18 metres at 10:36am

The forecast confidence remains moderate to high, and residents are advised to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas and heed all weather advisories as conditions continue to be monitored.
