The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued two updated special weather bulletins this afternoon, warning that persistent heavy rain continues to pose a serious flood risk across much of the country.

In Special Weather Bulletin Number Five, issued at 4:30pm today, a heavy rain warning remains in force for Yasawa, the eastern half of Viti Levu — covering Serua–Namosi, Navua–Suva–Nausori, Tailevu–Naitasiri–Ra — as well as the Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

A trough of low pressure continues to linger over Fiji, bringing cloud, showers and bands of heavy rain.

Authorities warn of possible flash flooding of small streams, low-lying informal settlements and Irish crossings, as well as surface flooding in urban centres with poor drainage.

A flash flood warning remains active for the eastern half of Viti Levu, with a flash flood alert still in force for the Northern Division.

The bulletin cautions that the main hazard continues to be flash flooding caused by isolated heavy rain, supported by data from the Fiji Flash Flood Guidance System, rainfall forecast models and weather radar.

The Met Office reported that Nasinu rainfall station recorded 79.5mm of rain in the past six hours.
