The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has warned that a heavy rain alert remains in effect for several parts of the country, as an active trough of low pressure continues to linger over Fiji.
The alert, issued at 5:30am today, Thursday January 1, 2026, covers the Northern Division, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands, as well as the eastern and interior parts of Viti Levu — stretching from Momi through Navua, Suva and Nausori up to Rakiraki, including interior Ba, Ra, Nadroga-Navosa, Serua, Namosi, Naitasiri and Tailevu North.
Forecasters say associated cloud and rain are expected to drift eastwards and affect much of the country through the day.
“Occasional rain and a few thunderstorms are expected, particularly in these areas,” the Centre noted, warning that persistent heavy falls may trigger flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone communities.
Rain is expected to gradually ease into showers later today, but authorities caution residents to remain alert.
Members of the public are being urged to monitor official updates, avoid flooded crossings and reconsider unnecessary travel during periods of heavy downpour.
Fishermen and those living near rivers and streams are also advised to exercise extreme caution.
