A heavy rain alert remains in force for the eastern half of Viti Levu — from Serua and Namosi through Navua, Suva, Nausori to Tailevu, Naitasiri and Ra — as well as for the Yasawa Group, Northern Division, Lau and Lomaiviti Groups, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.
According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, a trough of low pressure lies over the eastern parts of the country and is expected to strengthen later today, bringing cloud, showers and rain across much of the group for the next few days.
For the affected areas, residents can expect occasional rain, heavy at times with a few thunderstorms. The Met Office says the forecast confidence is moderate, but the potential for heavy rainfall remains significant, especially in the eastern and northern divisions.
Authorities warn that the heavy downpours may cause flash flooding of flood-prone and low-lying areas, including informal settlements and business districts, surface flooding on roads and urban areas with poor drainage, traffic disruptions at Irish crossings and low-lying bridges and reduced visibility and slippery roads, increasing the risk of road accidents.
The public is urged to remain alert, monitor weather updates, and take necessary precautions, especially those living in flood-prone areas.
Motorists are advised to drive with care and avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges
