The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has maintained a heavy rain alert for the entire Fiji Group as an active trough of low pressure approaches from the west.
According to the forecast, the system — accompanied by cloud and rain — is expected to affect the country from later today through to Thursday, January 1.
For today, cloudy periods with brief showers are expected over Ba, Tavua, Vatukoula, Ra, Rakiraki, parts of Tailevu, and the interior of Ba, Ra and Naitasiri. Other areas should experience mostly fine morning weather, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms likely.
However, rain and thunderstorms are forecast to develop from the west later today and gradually spread across the rest of the country.
Showers are expected to become frequent and intensify into rain, with localised heavy falls that may trigger flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, forecasters warn of occasional rain — heavy at times — with thunderstorms over most places, increasing the risk of flash flooding.
