Heavy rain alert issued for parts of Fiji

A heavy rain alert is now in force for the eastern half of Viti Levu — covering Serua-Namosi through Navua, Suva, Nausori, Tailevu, Naitasiri and Ra — as well as Southern Bua, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding islands.

Forecasters say the developing weather system is being driven by a moist easterly wind flow, with an active trough of low pressure expected to move over eastern Fiji from Saturday.

Occasional rain, heavy at times, and a few thunderstorms are expected to develop from Saturday.

The Weather Office warns the potential impacts include flash flooding of flood-prone and low-lying communities, including informal settlements, businesses and Irish crossings, which may result in traffic disruptions. Urban areas with poor drainage may also experience surface flooding.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution due to wet roads and reduced visibility, particularly during heavy downpours, which heighten the risk of road accidents.

The public is advised to stay updated with further alerts as conditions evolve.
