A heavy rain alert is now in force across the country as a developing weather system is expected to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms from later today.

The Fiji Meteorological Service issued the alert in a special weather bulletin at 10:30am today, warning that a southeast wind flow currently affecting the group will be followed by a trough of low pressure approaching from later today.

Associated cloud, showers and rain are expected to begin affecting the Northern and Eastern divisions from later today before gradually spreading to the rest of the country from tomorrow.

Forecasters say occasional rain, heavy at times, and thunderstorms are likely to develop over the Northern and Eastern divisions first, with similar conditions expected nationwide by Friday.

Authorities are warning of possible impacts including flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, particularly in informal settlements and communities. Businesses and Irish crossings may also be affected, potentially causing traffic disruptions.

Urban areas with poor drainage systems are expected to experience surface flooding, while wet road conditions and reduced visibility during heavy downpours could increase the risk of accidents.

The weather office is advising the public to remain alert and take necessary precautions as the system develops.
