The Fiji Meteorological Service has warned that strong winds and periods of heavy rain are expected to affect the Fiji Group from later tomorrow.

The service confirmed that a Heavy Rain Alert is now in force for the entire country, while Strong Wind Alerts have been issued for several land and marine areas.

The warnings are linked to Tropical Disturbance TD07F, which was officially numbered at midday today and located northeast of Vanuatu and far northwest of Fiji.

The system is expected to track south-southeast between Vanuatu and Fiji over the next two days, with a low chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone.

However, it is forecast to strengthen into a tropical depression by tomorrow.

Associated strong northwest winds of up to 55 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 80 kilometres per hour, are expected over the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, northern Vanua Levu, western and northern Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby islands.

Strong winds are also forecast for surrounding waters, including the Vatu-i-Ra Passage.

An active trough of low pressure is expected to bring occasional to periods of heavy rain across the country from later tomorrow.

Winds are forecast to ease by Thursday, while rainfall is expected to gradually ease by Friday.

The Fiji Meteorological Service is urging the public to remain alert and continue to monitor weather updates.
